Why the RTX 4070 Won't Be Around for Long (Now That the 5070 Is Out)

The RTX 4070 was nice when it landed. Good for 1440p, handled ray tracing fine, and was like the "balanced" card. But in 2025? With the RTX 5070 out now? Yeah… the 4070's getting old in a hurry.

Here's why it won't last long — and what you should really buy instead.

Why the 4070 is Already Lagging Behind:

1. Weakened VRAM Game

12GB sounds good until you understand new AAA games are devouring VRAM like snacks. When you turn up high textures or ray tracing, the 4070 is struggling to breathe.

2. Ray Tracing Problems

Yes, the 4070 supports ray tracing, but when the fps dives harder than your Wi-Fi in a Zoom class, you'll still end up disabling it.

3. The 5070 Is Now Here

This is the major one. The RTX 5070 boasts quicker GDDR7 memory, improved ray tracing cores, and all-new DLSS 4 features. In short, it's the upgraded version of the 4070. Why settle for the ancient sibling?

4. NVIDIA Already Looking Ahead

NVIDIA is discontinuing 4070 manufacturing. Translation: it's no longer the priority. Upcoming drivers and optimizations will prefer newer cards.

Improved Alternatives You Should Check Out

Okay, so if you were considering a 4070 — do not. Here's what to pick up instead:

  • RTX 5070 – The real sweet spot now. Newer technology, more efficiency, same "mid-tier gamer" market but future-proof.

  • RTX 5070 Ti – Same but with more power. If you've got the money to spend, this one will last you longer.

  • AMD RX 7800 XT – If you're looking for raw frames per dollar, AMD's mid-range monster is the steal of the day. Increased VRAM as well, which bodes well for future titles.

  • AMD RX 7900 XT – Giant leap if you're asking for 4K without entirely destroying your bank account.

  • RTX 4080 Super – Expensive, but if you care about max settings at 4K for years and years, this is the path.

Final Thoughts

The RTX 4070 isn't garbage — it just isn't made to last in 2025 and beyond. With the 5070 and RX 7800 XT on the table, the 4070 feels like old news already.

If you already have it: hold on to it, game at 1440p, enable DLSS, and you'll make it through.

If you're purchasing new: don't even think about it. Pick up a 5070 or RX 7800 XT and thank yourself later.
